Born in Seoul, Korea, Ko-Eun Lee entered the preparatory division of the Korea National University of Arts School of Music and at age 12, she attended the Yewon Arts middle school in Seoul where she studied with Choong-Mo Kang. She later attended Walnut Hill School and New England Conservatory’s preparatory school and studied with Wha-Kyung Byun. From 2004 to 2010, she studied with Jerome Lowenthal at the Juilliard School and graduated with a Bachelor of Music as well as a Master of Music. She is currently pursuing a professional studies program at the Manhattan School of Music with Andre Michel-Schub.
She won first prizes at the Joanna Hodges International Piano Competition, Aspen Music Festival concerto competition, Boston Symphony Orchestra concerto competition, and the Williams Chorale Bacard Fallon scholarship competition. She also received the special prize (Chopin etudes opus.25) from the Minneapolis International Piano-e-Competition.
In March, 2008, she won second prize in the Gina Bachauer Competition held at the Juilliard School, and broadcast on WQXR. She was also awarded first prize and the Jan Gorbaty memorial prize – for the best performance of Chopin’s works – at the Kosciuszko Foundation National Chopin Piano Competition and performed at the gala celebration of the Competition’s 60th anniversary at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall. In January 2011, she won first prize at the Widemann Piano Competition.
She has performed as soloist with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, Barcelona Symphony, Jerusalem Symphony, Aspen Concert Orchestra, the Boston Symphony, New England Youth Philharmonic, Longwood Symphony Orchestra, the Brockton Symphony Orchestra, the Northwest Florida Symphony and the South Arkansas Symphony.
She has given solo recitals at Mount Holyoke College, Sordoni Theater in Pennsylvania (a performance broadcast on WVIA), and Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center for winning the World Piano Competition in Cincinnati, in addition to appearances in Jackson, Mississippi, the Phillips Collection in Washington, and the Jam’n Bread Chamber Series in Shreveport.
