Granados
is universally recognized as one of Spain's most important composers. His music
is multi-faceted, and Romantic with some nationalist characteristics. His greatest success came with the piano
suite Goyescas, inspired by the
paintings of Goya. Granados also
successfully adapted the piece into an opera of the same name; it was the first
Spanish opera performed at the Metropolitan Opera, in 1916. This Intermezzo
from the opera, either in orchestral form or as a duet for cello and piano, has
proven popular.
