Biography
Pianist Tyler Wottrich has developed a career spanning an unusually broad spectrum of musical genres that includes solo piano, chamber music, ballet, opera, and gospel. A current fellow of The Academy (Ensemble ACJW; a program of Carnegie Hall, the Juilliard School, and the Weill Institute in collaboration with the New York City Department of Education), Wottrich performs frequently in such venues as Carnegie Hall's Zankel and Weill Halls, and the Brooklyn Public Library.
Mr. Wottrich received the 2011 Emerson Quartet's Ackerman Prize for chamber music and has performed with such artists as Alan Kay, Frank Morelli, Kevin Cobb, Osmo Vänskä, Harry Bicket, Jorja Fleezanis, Yair Kless, and Keith Underwood. In his collaboration with Bolshoi prima ballerina Nina Ananiashvili, he was described by the Minneapolis Star Tribune as "fearless and loving." His performances have been heard on classical radio stations including Chicago's WFMT, Cleveland's WCLV, Minnesota's MPR, and Michigan's WMNU.
Committed to his collaborations with singers, Mr. Wottrich has performed with members of the Grammy Award-winning African-American Choral Group "Sounds of Blackness" and has appeared at Marilyn Horne's "The Song Continues" at Carnegie Hall after garnering an honorable mention in the 2011 Marilyn Horne Song Competition. He has served as a vocal coach at Stony Brook University, Opera North, the Music Academy of the West, and the Cleveland Art Song Festival.
As a pedagogue, Tyler Wottrich has maintained an active studio of undergraduate students at Stony Brook University since 2009 and has presented masterclasses in the United States and abroad at institutions including the University of Wisconsin, the University of Minnesota, Skidmore College, the Pyotr Eben School in the Czech Republic, and Cremarian University in the Ukraine. As a member of Carnegie Hall's Academy, he presents numerous interactive educational performances in public schools and community venues throughout New York City's five boroughs.
Upcoming appearances include solo recitals and chamber music performances at Carnegie's Weill Recital Hall, the Juilliard School, Stony Brook University, the Galapagos Club, and other prominent New York City venues. He will also hold a collaborative piano internship at the Banff Centre during summer 2013.
Wottrich began his piano studies with Gail Olszewski before studying with Lydia Artymiw at the University of Minnesota, from which he graduated summa cum laude in 2009 with degrees in both music and mathematics. He was recently appointed to the faculty at North Dakota State University.
