Adagio from Spartacus     AramKhachaturian, arranged by Matthew Cameron

Khachaturian’s ballet Spartacus from the year 1954 carries a lot of personal significance for anyone who has ever struggled with and overcome political oppression. The work was Khachaturian’s reply to Stalin and his bullies, who harassed and persecuted all of the major intellectuals who would not create works glorifying the Soviet system. With the story of a rebellious slave who stood up to the system, Khachaturian enjoyed his own ultimate triumph. The piano transcription of the beautiful love song – Adagio – is lush and virtuosic in the grand pianistic style of Liszt and Rachmaninoff.      Kariné Poghosyan
