Ernest Chausson was born in Paris, where he later studied composition with César Franck at the Paris Conservatory. The two composers forged a lifelong friendship. Both Chausson and Franck were part of an astonishing artistic network of composers and artists in Paris such as Fauré, Debussy, Massenet, Monet, Degas and many others.
Pièce, op. 39 was written in 1897. It was his last published work. Chausson died very suddenly at the age of forty-four in 1899. His compositional language is unique in the sense that it combines the soul of the earlier Romantics such as Franck, with the colors and techniques of impressionist composers like Debussy.Notes by Ben Capps
