If we choose the word of the year in the field of technology, the loudest would be
metaverse The term itself is not new - it was invented back in 1992 by American science fiction writer Neal Stephenson in his novel Avalanche. Although techno-enthusiasts have been talking about this concept for many years, it gained mass recognition in October last year thanks to rebranding of Facebook - the head of the social network Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company would now be called Meta, and its focus would be shifted to building a metaworld.
A metavieworld is a world where virtual objects can interact with each other like real ones: with the help of digital twins (avatars), for example, it is possible to hold virtual meetings in virtual meeting rooms, attend concerts, study and watch movies. Some experts, including Zuckerberg, call the metaworld the next Internet, or the Internet 3.0, with which you can have new experiences that are not available now in two-dimensional web pages and applications.
But we should understand that the meta-universe is still a rather abstract concept, the realization of which requires not only investments, but also an appropriate level of technology and equipment development (the virtual reality helmets, which are still imperfect and expensive for the average user). There are also problems with compatibility between different platforms and content: different companies - Microsoft, Nvidia, Epic Games (the developer of Fortnite) and others - are involved in the race of future alternative metaworlds, building their own ecosystems.
