David Popper was a cellist who grew up and studied in Prague in the 19th century. His legacy lives on primarily through the set of 40 etudes he composed for the cello. A large purpose of what Popper composed was to stretch the limits of the cellist, to advance the cello into a virtuoso instrument. To cellists and musicians alike, Popper is noted for his virtuoso concert pieces such as Spinning Song and Dance of the Elves. Lesser known to the typical audience are a large number of pieces with great beauty and character, such as the Spanish Dances Op. 54. The second piece in this set, the Serenade, is a typical serenade with intense Spanish flavor, dusted with flirtatious bits of virtuosity. Matthew Allen
