Silver Clouds Chasing the Moon was composed by a renowned Chinese composer Ren Guan in 1935, initially for a traditional Chinese-instrument ensemble. Guan innovatively combined Western compositional techniques with traditional Chinese music elements which features elegant lyricism, a charming and imaginative atmosphere, as well as the beautiful tone of the traditional Chinese string and wind instruments. In the decades after its original creation, this piece was arranged for a variety of instrumental and vocal forms. One of the most successful and best known is the arrangement for piano of the same name in 1975, by Chinese composer Wang Jianzhong. Wang’s transcription retains the music’s original style and foundation, while masterfully blending with the use of a Western instrument, the piano. - Lei Weng
