Alessandro Maffucci, Tenor
Biography
He has distinguished himself as one of the most interesting tenors of his generation in recent years. Thanks to a voice of particular strength and timbre, he has been able to undertake primary roles such as Calaf (Turandot/Puccini), Radames (Aida/Verdi), Luigi (Il Tabarro/Puccini), Cavaradossi (Tosca/ Puccini), Pinkerton (Madame Butterfly), Turiddu (Cavalleria Rusticana/ Mascagni), Don José (Carme n/Bizet), Manrico (Trovatore/Verdi), Canio (Pagliacci/Leoncavallo). His interpretation of Verdi’s Othello is of special importance. He performed this role several times in different operatic productions, after having made his debut at the International Festival of Music of San Gimignano in 2000 (Artistic Director Stefano Del Seta). He is one of the few tenors in the entire international sphere able to sustain the arduous role of the Moore. His interest in Chamber Music and Symphonic Choral Music began when he was studying the violin and matured while attending The Music School of Fiesole, where he studied singing under the guide of Massimo Sardi. His exceptionally flexible voice brought him to approach this type of repertory with excellent results (Das Lied von der Erde by G. Mahler, Messa da Requiem by A. Bruckner, Messa dell’Incoronazione by W.A. Mozart, Messa di Gloria by G. Puccini, Petite Messe Solemnelle by G. Rossini, etc.). Maffucci has also performed in Peking, Bucharest and Milan, where he distinguished himself in Verdi’s Messa da Requiem and under the direction of Maestro Piero Bellugi in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and Mozart’s Requiem. His repertory also extends to Vocal Chamber Music with particular attention, not only to Nineteenth Century Italian Chamber Music (Francesco Paolo Tosti), but also and above all to Austrian-German Liederistic (Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Franz Liszt) and the Argentine Composers of the Twentieth Century (Alberto Ginastera, Carlos Guastavino), which he performed in a duet with the pianist Roberto Russo. He recorded 1997 Romancero Gitano by Mario Castelnuovo Tedesco together with the guitar player Flavio Cucchi (CD Arc Music edition). He attended September 2002 Peter Schreier’s Master Class dedicated to German Lied at the "Teatro della Pergola" in Firenze.
