Alexander Tchobanov, Pianist, Educator, Researcher
Described as delivering “magnificent, edge-of-the-seat playing” (Fanfare Magazine), Alexander Tchobanov has captivated audiences across the United States, Europe, and Asia. Following his Carnegie Hall solo debut in 2013, the New York Concert Review praised his performance, stating, "Mr. Tchobanov's colors and voicing were superb—there is a major virtuoso there."
Tchobanov has been invited to perform at prestigious venues such as Cité de la Musique at Paris Philharmonie, Auersperg Palace in Vienna, Jordan Hall in Boston, Los Angeles Music Center, Steinway Hall in Dubai, Manila Piano Artist Series, the International Piano Festival “Krystian Tkaczewski” in Tarnów, Poland, and CME Concerto Fest, among others. As a concerto soloist, he has performed with the Vienna Residence Orchestra and the Tarnów Chamber Orchestra under the batons of distinguished conductors such as Robert Lehrbaumer and Masahi Katayama.
His recordings have been featured on Bulgarian National TV & Radio and live broadcasts on WGBH Boston, WXEL South Florida, and NPR. He has recorded for the Navona Records and Ulysses Arts labels, with his debut CD, Eclectic Sounds (2022), receiving critical acclaim. Fanfare Magazine awarded it a five-star rating, describing it as “a tremendously stimulating program, played with the utmost intelligence, musicality, and skill.” Sonograma Magazine hailed it as “full of energy and passion, exuding expressivity.” The album has been broadcast on major radio stations across the United States and the Middle East, including Dubai Eye Radio, Spokane Public Radio, WTUL New Orleans, and WRUV Vermont.
A laureate of numerous international competitions, Tchobanov has received top prizes from the Bradshaw & Buono International Competition, Artist International Auditions, Paris Grand Prize International Competition, and the S. Obretenov National Competition in Bulgaria. He is also a two-time recipient of scholarship awards from the Leni Fe Bland Foundation.
An avid chamber musician, Tchobanov has performed with members of the London Symphony Orchestra, Miyazawa flutist Christian Plouvier, and Paul Phoenix of The King’s Singers. His performances have been praised by publications such as Gulf News, Al Bayan, Yakima Herald, The Palm Beach Post, and Trud.
A dedicated educator, Tchobanov has held teaching positions at Rutgers University as a Graduate Assistant, Lynn University Pre-College Division, and Brighton College in the UAE. In 2012, he was appointed Artist Faculty at the Seasons Music Festival Academy in Yakima, USA, where he conducted masterclasses, solo recitals, and chamber collaborations. He has also given masterclasses in the Philippines, the U.S., and the UAE. His students have won top prizes in competitions such as the Abu Dhabi Young Musician Competition, Young Musician of the Year in Dubai, and the Hong Kong Music Talent & Performance Award. They have performed in renowned venues, including Dubai Opera, Steinway Hall Dubai, Abu Dhabi Cultural Foundation, NYU Abu Dhabi, and the Abu Dhabi Festival. Tchobanov has also served as a jury member for international competitions, including the 2023 Cyprus International Music Competition, Young Musician Piano Competition in Florida, and the Culture Caravan International Festival in Poland.
Alexander Tchobanov began his musical studies at Dobrin Petkov Music sSchool in Plovdiv, Bulgaria and subsequently completed his high school diploma at the Idyllwild Arts Academy in California. Tchobanov earned his Bachelor of Music degree at Lynn University Conservatory of Music as a full-scholarship student of Roberta Rust. He gained his Master’s degree at Rutgers University under the guidance of esteemed pianist Susan Starr, where he was awarded a Graduate Assistantship. He was also granted a fellowship to attend the Music Academy of the West, where he studied with Jerome Lowenthal of the Juilliard School. Throughout his career, he has worked with prominent musicians such as Lars Vogt, Robert Levin, Midori, André De Groote, John Perry, Rebecca Penneys, Nelita True, and members of the Takács Quartet.
Currently, Alexander Tchobanov serves as Head of Keyboard Studies at The British School – Al Khubairat in Abu Dhabi and is a PARMA Artist.
