Alexandre Dossin, Piano
Biography
Hailed by international critics as a "phenomenon" (Zero Hora, Porto Alegre, Brazil) and a "magnificent" performer (Martha Argerich), Brazilian born Alexandre Dossin has already firmly established himself as a pianist of the first rank. With his varied solo and concerti repertoire, he is in demand as both a solo recitalist and a guest soloist with orchestras. Since his debut at age 14 with the Porto Alegre (Brazil) Symphony, he has performed more than 300 solo recitals and concerts with orchestras in 15 countries.
Mr. Dossin was awarded both the First Prize and the Special Prize at the Martha Argerich International Piano Competition in 2003. Other awards include the Silver Medal and 2nd Honorable Mention in the Maria Callas Grand Prix (Athens, Greece, 1996) and both the Third Prize and Special Prize at the Mozart International Piano Competition (Salzburg, Austria, 1995).
Recent engagements include solo recitals in Texas, Michigan, Mississippi, and Virginia, and at the 2005 Martha Argerich Festival in Beppu, Japan where he performed with the Buenos Aires Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Charles Dutoit.
Mr. Dossin's recent orchestral appearances included performances of Schumann's Piano Concerto with the Buenos Aires Philharmonic Orchestra, Beethoven's "Emperor" Concerto with the Eau Claire Chamber Orchestra, and Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini with the Porto Alegre Symphony Orchestra (Brazil). The pianist wrote the cadenzas for two Mozart Concerti appearances with the String Orchestra of the Rockies in Montana, and has just returned from a concert tour in Brazil, where he performed Chopin's f minor and Tchaikovsky's b-flat minor concertos. He has also performed numerous solo recitals, performed with chamber ensembles, and held master classes and lecture/recitals throughout the United States and South America.
Alexandre Dossin's two commercially released CDs received favorable reviews from American Record Guide and Fanfare Magazine. Alan Becker, The American Record Guide reviewer, remarked that "he has the dexterity and musical skills to bring this diverse collection off' and that "he eschews showiness and emphasizes refinement in all of these works." Peter Burwasser from Fanfare concluded that "Dossin plays this compelling music [by Edino Krieger] with great heart and skill. Well worth a listen."
Mr. Dossin is a graduate of the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory, where he studied with Sergei Dorensky. He received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 2001, where his teachers were William Race and Gregory Allen. Previously on the faculty at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Alexandre Dossin is joining the University of Oregon School of Music faculty in the fall.
