Biography
The winner of the 2012 Northeast Horn Solo Competition and 2013 Stony Brook Concerto Competition, Egyptian Hornist Amr Selim started playing the Horn at the age of eleven. He won his first job at the age of seventeen with the Cairo Symphony Orchestra and served as Guest Principal Horn with Amman Symphony Orchestra and National Algerian Orchestra. Mr. Selim is also a former principal of Ars Flores Symphony Orchestra and Symphony of the Americas in Florida. . He has performed with conductors: Daniel Barenboim, Frank Shipway, Christopher Muller, Ingo Metzmacher, Gunther Schuller and many others. Amr has toured Greece, Italy, France, Germany, the Middle East and across the United States, teaching and performing.
A winner of the Ackerman, and the Egyptian Ministry of Culture chamber music competitions, an active chamber musician, he is a founding member of Opus Now, an upcoming wind quintet based out of New York City and currently working on a recording project with Jazz Vibraphonist and composer Eldad Tarmu to be released in late 2014. Amr is a founding member of Gadayel Duo with his wife; pianist Seba Ali with recent performances in Lincoln and Kaufman Centers in New York City.
Mr. Selim has appeared as a soloist with Burlington Chamber Orchestra, Gracis Symphony Orchestra, Cairo Conservatory Orchestra and Bibliotheca Alexandria Orchestra when he gave the Egyptian premier of the Gordon Jacob Horn Concerto. His future solo engagements includes the world premier of composer Peter Winkler’s Elegy for Horn and Wind ensemble with the Stony Brook Wind Ensemble, and the Hindemith Horn Concerto with Stony Brook Symphony Orchestra and conductor Jeffery Milarsky.
Amr’s performances have been broadcast on Deutsche Welle, WHSU and New York’s Classical Music Radio WQXR. As an educator, Amr is the horn professor at Adelphi University and Mahanaim Conservatory and a former head of Music at Appel Farm Arts Camp. He has given masterclasses in the U.S. (New York, Florida, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Mississippi and California) and abroad. He also is the Horn Teaching Assistant at Stony Brook University as well as a Chamber Music Coach at its Pre-College Division.
Along with the masterpieces of the 18th, 19th and 20th century, Amr is constantly inspired by works composed in our time and enjoys working with living composers; he has premiered many works by European, Middle Eastern and American composers. He now is working with Iranian and Egyptian Composers on a project titled “Vocalizing the Horn; New techniques for interpreting Middle Eastern Vocal Music on the Horn”
Amr Holds a Bachelor of Music from Cairo Conservatory, a Professional Performance Certificate from Lynn Conservatory, and as a recipient of the prestigious Staller Scholar Award he holds a Master’s of Music from Stony Brook University and is currently working on his Doctorate.
