Biography
Baljinder Singh Sekhon, II is an active composer and teacher whose works range from full orchestra to gamelan ensemble to solo pieces and he has received commissions and recognition from many prominent individuals and organizations. His recent awards include the Howard Hanson Orchestral Prize (2007 and 2009), Audio Inversions Composition Contest (2008), Brian M. Israel Prize (2008), Percussive Arts Society Composition Competition (2nd place, 2008), Belle Gitelman Award (2008), and a Morton Gould Young Composers Award (2006). He has recently been commissioned by percussionist Michael Burritt, trombonist Massimo La Rosa (principal tbn. Cleveland Orchestra), violist John Graham, and The Robert G. Boehmler Foundation. Notable platforms for the performance of his works have included The Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music (2009), a full concert of his works at The Stone in New York City (2008), perKumania International Percussion Festival in Paris, France (2009), and performances at the New World Symphony's Musicians' Forum concert series (2008), The National Saxophone Alliance Convention (2008), and The World Saxophone Congress in Bangkok, Thailand (2009). Previously, Baljinder has received fellowships to the Bang on a Can Summer Institute, the Composers Conference at Wellesley College and the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music. Baljinder was recently named a Curatorial Associate for the MATA Interval Series in New York City where he will produce a concert of pieces for Saxophone Quartet and Electronics. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Composition at the Eastman School of Music where he has taught in the Eastman Computer Music Center, private Composition Lessons, Calligraphy and Computer Notation, served as President of the OSSIA New Music Ensemble, and will teach Orchestration during the spring 2010 semester.
