Biography

Praised by Peninsula Reviews for her "superb technique and extraordinary musical understanding," Chinese-American pianist Clara Yang is currently Assistant Professor of Piano at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has performed in venues such as the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Remonstrantse Kerk in the Netherlands, the Seymour Centre in Sydney, among many others and her live performance was heard on ABC Classic FM in Australia and New Zealand. Her performance of Chopin's Sonata No.3 was featured on Wayne Picciano's "Grand Piano" series, which was broadcast on television in multiple states across the country.

As a concerto soloist, she has performed with the European Union Youth Orchestra, the North Carolina Symphony, the Pacific Symphony Orchestra, and the Eastman Philharmonia, among others, collaborating with renowned conductors such as Vladimir Ashkenazy, Grant Llewellyn, Jeff Tyzik, and Carl St. Clair.  The 2013-2014 season includes a return engagement with the North Carolina Symphony. Other upcoming concerto engagements include the Longview Orchestra and the UNC Symphony. Recently, she has given a successful lecture recital at the Musical College of the Moscow State Conservatory in Russia.  Her solo recital tour in China included concerts at the Beijing Central Conservatory, the Shanghai Conservatory, and the Central Conservatory Piano Academy in Xiamen.

She has performed in renowned music festivals such as the Music Academy of the West, the Sarasota Music Festival, the International Holland Music Sessions, and the Aspen Music Festival. Her recording on the Ullanta Artists label is featured on Lowell Liebermann's official website. An avid chamber musician, Ms. Yang has collaborated with members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Opera, the San Diego Symphony, and the Hong Kong Philharmonic.

Ms. Yang received her doctoral degree in Piano Performance from the Eastman School of Music under the guidance of Nelita True. She studied with Claude Frank at Yale School of Music (M.M., Artist Diploma), and she graduated magna cum laude from the University of Southern California as a student of John Perry. She has also worked with numerous renowned performers and pedagogues, such as Boris Berman, Peter Frankl, Karl Heinz Kammerling, Robert Levin, Lee Kum-Sing, Jerome Lowenthal, David Shifrin, the Emerson String Quartet, the Ysaye String Quartet, and the Raphael Trio.
