Colleen Matheu, Flute
Biography
Flutist, Colleen Matheu completed her graduate flute and piccolo performance studies at Northwestern University with Walfrid Kujala in June of 2003. She received her bachelor of music degree in flute performance from Oberlin Conservatory of Music. While attending Oberlin, Colleen was under the tutulage of Michel Debost and Kathleen Chastain. Colleen has also studied with principal flutist of the Chicago Symphony, Mathieu Dufour. She currently is the substitute 3rd flute and piccolo player with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. She also holds the 3rd flute/piccoloist position with the Kalamazoo Symphony in Michigan and is 2nd flutist of the American Memento Philharmonic.
Colleen has received several scholarships from Oberlin, Northwestern, and other institutions. She has won prizes in the Musicians Club of Women's Annual Music Scholarship Audition, the Kingsville Young Artist Competition, the National Flute Association's Young Artist Piccolo Artist Competition, the American Federation of Musicians Competition, and the Texas Music Festival's Young Artist Concerto Competition, among others. In 2003, Colleen was the recipient of the Louise E. Heim Northwestern University scholarship as well as the Chicago Federation of Musicians scholarship.
Colleen has attended such festivals as the Spoleto USA Music Festival, the Aspen Music Festival, the Texas Music Festival, the Henry Mancini Institute, the Domaine Forget Summer Institute, the Bowdoin Summer Music Festival, and the Walfrid Kujala Orchestral Studies Institute. She has performed in masterclasses for such flutists as Emmanuel Pahud, William Bennett, Ransom Wilson, William Hebert, Mark Sparks, Paula Robison, and Aralee Dorough.
