David Shimoni, Piano
Biography
Described by the American Record Guide as a pianist whose
playing “was as smooth as velvet,” David Shimoni has performed extensively
throughout the United States. He has appeared in recital in New York’s Zankel
Hall, Weill Recital Hall, Alice Tully Hall, and Museum of Modern Art. He has
also performed at the Barns at Wolf Trap, the Chicago Cultural Center, the
Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts, the Dallas Museum of Art, and Columbia,
Princeton, Cornell, and Stanford Universities.
Born in Chapel Hill, NC, Mr. Shimoni attended the North
Carolina School of the Arts during high school and earned a B.A. from
Swarthmore College. He then received the Vladimir Horowitz Scholarship to
study at the Juilliard School, where he obtained masters degrees in both solo
and collaborative performance.
In 2001 Mr. Shimoni was the first-prize winner of the
National Federation of Music Clubs’ Young Artist Auditions, which sponsored two
years of recitals throughout the United States. He was also the winner of the Beethoven
Sonata Competition, Five Towns Music and Art Competition, and Simone Belsky
Competition. He has been a guest artist at the Chautauqua, Brevard, Moab,
Foothills, and Rockport music festivals, and his performances have been
broadcast on radio stations WGBH-Boston, WFMT-Chicago, and WQXR-New York.
Sought after
for his skills as a collaborator, Mr. Shimoni has worked with the Jupiter
String Quartet, New York Festival of Song, Southeastern Festival of Song, and
Toronto Dance Theatre. He
frequently accompanies singers under such auspices as the Marilyn Horne
Foundation, the Juilliard School’s Alice Tully Hall Vocal Debut Recital,
Concert Artists Guild, Rockefeller University’s Tri-Institutional Recital
Series, and the Artist Series of Sarasota. He has also completed fifteen educational and outreach tours
throughout the United States in affiliation with the Piatigorsky Foundation.
Mr. Shimoni has been on the
accompanying and teaching staff of The Juilliard School, Brooklyn College, the
New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, and the Ravinia Steans
Institute. In addition to performing and teaching, Mr. Shimoni is
currently completing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in piano performance at
The Graduate Center of the City University of New York.
