Biography
A native of New Zealand, Henry Wong Doe has garnered top prizes, including two “Audience Favorite” awards in the Rubinstein, Busoni and Sydney International Piano Competitions.
Mr. Wong Doe has performed at major venues around the world, including Lincoln Center, Heinz Hall in Pittsburgh, the Sydney Opera House in Australia, and the Mann Auditorium in Tel Aviv, Israel. An avid performer of 20th and 21st Century music, Mr. Wong Doe’s 2008 debut recital at Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall featured solo and interactive works for pianist and computer controlled piano, including a world premiere by New York based composer Brendan Adamson.
Henry Wong Doe has performed with the Sydney Symphony, Australian Chamber, Auckland Philharmonia and Israel Philharmonic Orchestras, and collaborated with conductors Christopher Hogwood, Mendi Rodan, Fabio Mechetti, Michael Christie, and Edvard Tchivzel. Appearances on television and radio include BBC Radio 3 (UK), ABC Classics FM and Channel 9 (Australia), Concert FM and TVNZ (New Zealand), RTBF and Canal La Deux (Belgium), and Kolhamusica (The Musical Voice) Israel. Mr. Wong Doe’s prize winning performances at the 2000 Sydney International Piano Competition were recorded and released on the Australian ABC Classics label.
This season Mr. Wong Doe will make his debut with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, performing Beethoven’s 2nd Concerto under the baton of Thomas Hong. His first solo disc of piano works by New Zealand composer Gareth Farr will be released this summer on HRL Morrison Trust Records.
Following a Master’s degree at Indiana University, Henry Wong Doe graduated with his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from The Juilliard School in New York. His teachers have included Evelyne Brancart, Leonard Hokanson, Joseph Kalichstein and Richard Goode. In addition to a busy performing schedule, Mr. Wong Doe is currently Assistant Professor of Piano at Indiana University Pennsylvania.
