Hon-Cheong Chan, piano
Biography
Mr. Chan began playing piano at age 7, and by his teenage years he had earned
several top competition prizes in his native Malaysia. He came to the United
States in the early 1990s to study piano performance at the University of
Montana. While there, Mr. Chan also served as a pianist with the Missoula
Symphony and the University of Montana Orchestra. Mr. Chan studied piano with
teachers Steven Hesla, Dennis Alexander, and Edvinas Minkstimas, and took master
class with pianists Stephen Hough, Janina Fialkowska, Angela Chang, and Edna
Golansky.
In recent years, Mr. Chan has appeared in public and private concerts at
various venues in the Metropolitan D.C. area including the Sumner School Museum,
the National Press Club, Embassy of France, Phillips Collections for private
functions. In May 2008/2009, Mr. Chan was invited to perform solo piano music
featuring the works of Tan Dun, Joe Hisaishi, Lin Hai and Takahashi Yuji at
Arnold and Porter LLP in Washington D.C. celebrating the Asian Pacific Heritage
Month.
With a belief that music serves joyful and healing qualities to performers
and audiences alike, in 2007, Mr. Chan founded HanZone Productions in memory of
his mother's passing due to cancer, producing benefit concerts for charitable
events. In less than two years, HanZone Productions has held numerous musical
concerts to raise money for groups such as Miriam's House, Mosaic Initiatives,
Caring Companions, and the D.C. Public Library in Georgetown(where he directed
and performed the "Carnival of the Animals" with a chamber ensemble).
In Dec
2009, Mr. Chan also acted as a founding/performing members of Classical
Revolution DC, where musicians from all walks of life present free chamber music
at non-conventional venue such as restaurants, cafe, hotels etc. Classical
Revolution has a worldwide presence (NYC, Berlin, Belgrade, Melbourne, San
Francisco, Chicago, Philadelphia, Banff, Cleveland, Cincinnati and more) and
made DC debut on Dec 3rd, 2009.
