Joseph Middleton, Piano
Biography
Recently described in The Times as ‘the cream of the new generation’, Joseph Middleton enjoys a busy and varied career as a chamber musician and song accompanist.
A graduate of the University of Birmingham and the Royal Academy of Music, Joseph's competitive successes include the Accompaniment Prizes of the Wigmore Hall International Song Competition, Kathleen Ferrier Awards, Richard Tauber Prize, Royal Over-Seas League Competition and Geoffrey Parsons Memorial Award. In Germany he recently won the ‘Best Lied-Pianist Prize’ at the International Schubert Competition LiedDuo.
Joseph has given recitals with internationally established singers of the opera world, including Sir Thomas Allen, Dame Felicity Lott, Ann Murray, Joan Rodgers, Amanda Roocroft, Wolfgang Holzmair, Mark Padmore, Christopher Maltman, Katarina Karnéus, Andrew Kennedy, Toby Spence, Geraldine McGreevy, Matthew Rose, Janice Watson, and Jonathan Lemalu. He regularly collaborates with rising stars from the younger generation and in 2012 he formed the Myrthen Ensemble with regular duo partners Sophie Bevan, Clara Mouriz, Allan Clayton and Marcus Farnsworth. He has also accompanied Jennifer Johnston, Katherine Broderick, Lucy Crowe, Ronan Collett, Anna Leese, Anna Grevelius, Robert Murray and Catherine Hopper. Work with instrumentalists includes concerts with Alexander Baillie, Emma Johnson and Nicholas Daniel.
In recent seasons he has appeared at major music centres including the Aix-en-Provence, Aldeburgh, Brighton, Cheltenham, City of London, Edinburgh, Oxford Lieder, Ravinia, Three Choirs and Toronto and Vancouver Festivals. He gives frequent recitals at such venues as the Wigmore Hall, Royal Opera House, Royal Festival Hall, Purcell Room, St. John's, Smith Square, the Millennium Centre in Cardiff, Birmingham's Symphony Hall, Bristol's Colston Hall and The Sage Gateshead, as well as venues throughout Europe, the USA and Canada. His discography includes 'Elgar in Sussex' with Dame Felicity Lott (Champs Hill Records) and a CD of Spanish Songs with Clara Mouriz (Sonimage Classics). Recital CDs with Amanda Roocroft and Jonathan Lemalu will be released during the 2012/13 season and he has also recently recorded the world premiere of lieder by Ludwig Thuille with Sophie Bevan and Jennifer Johnston.
Highlights of this season include recitals with Sir Thomas Allen, Dame Felicity Lott, Katarina Karnéus, Carolyn Sampson, Sophie Daneman and Amanda Roocroft and BBC Radio 3 broadcasts with Clara Mouriz, Jennifer Johnston, Sophie Bevan, Ruby Hughes, Benedict Nelson and Marcus Farnsworth. He will appear at the Ravinia, City of London and Cheltenham Festivals, in Vancouver with Sir Thomas Allen and at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw with Katarina Karnéus. He will also programme recitals for Samling’s residency at King’s Place, and will curate a week of BBC lunchtime concerts from the Lammermuir Festival.
