Joshua Halpern, Cello
Biography
Joshua Halpern, cello, is a recent graduate of the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University where he earned his Bachelor's degree under the tutelage of Desmond Hoebig. Previously, he studied with Alan Rafferty in Cincinnati, Ohio. In recent years, he has studied under and participated in master classes with Hans Jørgen Jensen, Frans Helmerson, Ralph Kirshbaum, Gary Hoffman, Timothy Eddy, Carter Brey, Alan Stepansky, David Geber, Robert McDonald, and members of the Borromeo, Brentano, Cleveland, Emerson, Guarneri, Johannes, Juilliard, Miró, Orion, and Takács Quartets. An avid chamber musician, he has collaborated with Atar Arad, Itzhak Perlman, Jon Kimura Parker, Richie Hawley, Ivo van der Werff, and Desmond Hoebig, and he was a founding member of the Polaris Quartet, which won the Gold Medal in the Junior Division of the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. He was also a winner of the Shepherd School of Music's concerto competition and the National Winner at the Music Teachers National Association Competition in 2011. He has participated in many festivals, including the Music Academy of the West, the Taos School of Music, the Perlman Music Program, the Ravinia Steans Institute, and the New York String Orchestra Seminar.
