Kyle
Dickson is entering his third year as a Violin Performance at Michigan State
University College of Music. He received his first violin instruction at Marvin
L. Winans Academy of Performing Arts in Detroit, MI with Karin Pierson and
Nenad Djordjevic. He continued studies
thereafter with Dr. Laura Roelofs at Wayne State University. As a student, Kyle
received Superior Ratings at Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association
festivals at District and State levels, the Michigan Federation of Music Clubs,
and the Michigan Charter School Competition in 2008.
Kyle's
extensive background includes performances with Grammy award winning Marvin
Winans at the legendary Fox Theater, performing for the cast of Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess" during a trip to Munich,
Germany, solo performances at Seldom Blues, Arturo's Jazz and Music Theater in
Southfield, MI, the James Tatum Foundation Artist Showcase, several private
donor events held at Detroit's Orchestra Hall, and more recently, performing
for the Perfecting Church Gala at the Renaissance Center for film maker Tyler
Perry and gospel singer Kim Burrell.
Kyle has also appeared as soloist with both the MSU Undergraduate
Chamber Symphony and the Winans Academy Orchestra. Kyle has also played in masterclasses
for acclaimed cellist and conductor Anthony Elliott, first violinist of the
Harlem Quartet Ilmar Gavilan, and the members of the Rawlins Piano Trio from
USD College of Music.
Kyle
has held the position of Concertmaster and Assistant Concertmaster of both the
Winans Academy Orchestra and Heavenly Strings Orchestra respectively, held
principle positions in the Eastern Symphony Orchestra in Greensboro, NC, and
has performed with the Metropolitan Youth Symphony, Detroit Civic Sinfonia, MSU
Symphony Orchestra and MSU Opera Orchestra.
The
recipient of several awards and distinctions, including the Spaulding-Gulliver
Music Scholarship in Music (2009), Congressional Black Caucus Performing Arts
Scholarship (2008), James Tatum Foundation for the Arts Scholarship (2008), EMF
Young Artist Merit Scholarship (2009), Kyle was a finalist in the 22nd
Annual Simon Clements Talent Hunt. He has participated in the Sphinx
Performance Academy at Walnut Hill Academy in Natick, MA and the Eastern Music
Festival at Greensboro, NC.
Currently,
Kyle is a member of the newly formed Trio Moderno, a violin/clarinet/piano trio
based at MSU, and studies with Dr. Walter Verdehr. This season, Kyle will be
appearing in solo recitals both in Detroit and East Lansing, and returning to
appear as a soloist with the Undergraduate Chamber Symphony at MSU.
