Martha Councell, Flute
Biography
Martha Councell is an energetic and inventive solo and chamber musician, having performed in Europe, Central and South America, and across the United States. She is a top prizewinner in several national competitions, including the National Flute Association's Young Artist Competition (2000), Frank Bowen Flute Competition (Albuquerque, 1996), and the Flute Talk Competition (Chicago, 1996).
She has performed internationally as part of the Festival International de Flautistas in Lima, Peru, the Asociacion National de Contiertos in Panamá City, Panama, in Paris France, where she was invited to perform at the Jean Pierre Rampal International Concours de Flute in 2005, and Uelzen, Germany, where she was the only American to compete in the International Friedrich Kuhlau flute competition in 2007, and was honored as a semi-finalist. In the summer of 2007 she toured the United Kingdom, with performances in London and Dublin.
Ms. Councell earned degrees from the Oberlin Conservatory, where she studied with Michel Debost, and Rice University's Shepherd School of Music, where she studied with Leone Buyse. Ms. Councell is in her first year as adjunct faculty at Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa, and is currently a doctoral fellow at the University of Iowa.
