Ruth Marshall, Cello
Biography
Ruth Marshall began cello and piano studies at age 4 in her native city Seattle, WA. An alumna of the Garfield High School Orchestra and the Seattle Youth Symphony, Ms. Marshall went on to pursue undergraduate studies at the University of Washington where she earned degrees in Comparative History of Ideas and Music Theory, with minors in History and Russian Literature. She continued her education at DePaul University in Chicago, completing a Master of Music and a Certificate in Performance. She has participated in the Aspen Music Festival and Round Top Festival-Institute, and has had chamber music residencies at the Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada, and the Aldeburgh Festival in England. Her major teachers were David Tonkonogui and Walter Gray in Seattle, and Stephen Balderston in Chicago.
Ms. Marshall is very active as a pedagogue, with over 25 private students. She is currently on the faculty at the Butler University Community Arts School in Indianapolis, and at the DePaul University School of Music in Chicago. From 2009 to 2011, she was a member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. Currently, she performs regularly with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, and the Columbus Symphony Orchestra in Ohio. She is the newly appointed principal cello of the Illinois Symphony.
