Biography
Sergey Ostrovsky, first violinist and founder of the Aviv String Quartet, is a winner of the 3rd Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition (1999, Grand Prix and 4 Special Prizes), Bordeaux String Quartet Competition (2003), and the Aviv National Music Competition (1999, Tel Aviv). His other top prizes include at the Schubert and Modernity Competition (2003, Graz, Austria, 2nd Prize and Schubert Prize) and the Rodolfo Lipizer Violin Competition (Italy, 1995).
As soloist and as a member of the Aviv String Quartet, Mr. Ostrovsky has performed in such internationally renowned venues as Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, the Kennedy Center, The Library of Congress, Wigmore Hall, Royal Festival Hall, Auditorium du Louvre, Theatre de la Ville (Paris), the Sydney Opera House, Cologne Philharmonie, Beethoven House (Bonn), and Tchaikovsky Hall of the Moscow Conservatory.
Sergey Ostrovsky was born in 1975 in Gorky. He began playing violin at the age of 6. He followed his early training by entering the Music College of Gorky Conservatory and in 1990 won his first prize in the Russian National Competition. In 1991, he immigrated to Israel with his family and continued his studies at the Rubin Academy of Music of Tel Aviv University In 1996 Sergey founded the Aviv Quartet which relocated him to Europe to study in Cologne Hochschule (1998-2000). Sergey completed his Bachelor Degree Diploma at the Rotterdam Conservatory with Natalia Morozova in 2000, and his Master Degree Diploma in Amsterdam Conservatory with Alexander Kerr in 2002.
In February 2006, Sergey recorded with violinist Maxim Vengerov and The Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra, the Mozart Concertone for two violins for EMI Classics. In September of this year, he began a position as First Concertmaster of Orchestre de la Suisse Romande in Geneva. Mr. Ostrovsky plays on a 1716 Grancinno violin, purchased with the support of Mr. James Mayer and Zfunot Tarbut, a non-profit organization for arts and artists in Israel.
