Tamara Matthews, Soprano
Biography
American soprano Tamara Matthews has rapidly risen to international status with recent debuts in
France, Spain, and Israel, as well as major venues in the United States. Possessing “a glorious instrument, velvety and warm,
glistening with light and dramatically forceful”, Ms. Matthews’ singing resulted in her acclaimed Carnegie Hall debut in 1994 as
first prize winner of the Musica Sacra Bach Vocal Competition.
International appearances by Ms. Matthews include with the Orchestre Philharmonique du Strasbourg in Strauss’s Vier
Letzte Lieder, and Wagner’s Liebestod; as Violetta with the Festival Lyrique-Belle Ile en Mer; and with the
Haifa (Israel) Symphony with conductor Stanley Sperber.
Ms. Matthews’s recent American concert performances include appearances in Carnegie Hall (St. Matthew Passion); Kennedy Center
(Mass in B Minor, Messiah); Alice Tully Hall (Messiah); with the Cleveland Orchestra (Beethoven Mass in C); Philadelphia Orchestra
(Poulenc Gloria); Houston Symphony (Messiah); Knoxville Symphony (Mass in b minor); Los Angeles Master Chorale (Brahms
Requiem): with an esteemed list of conductors - Leonard Slatkin, Joseph Flummerfelt, Joshua Rifkin, Luis Biava, Robert Page, Paul Salamunovich, Richard Westenburg and Thomas Wikman.
Recordings to her credit, include an impressive Bach repertoire as soprano soloist in the Mass in b minor
and the Christmas Oratorio, and in the St. Matthew Passion for Koch International Classics. Additional recordings include
Beethoven’s 9th Symphony; Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass; Italian solos by Ristori, Fux and Lotti; Buxtehude’s solo
cantatas; and consort music of William Byrd with the New York Consort of Viols (Lyrichord Discs).
In addition to a busy performing career, Ms. Matthews teaches and conducts master classes regularly at festivals and seminars. In the
Fall of 2003, she accepted a position at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina.
