Valerie Vinzant, Soprano
Biography
American soprano Valerie Vinzant has been hailed by critics for her “delectable lyric soprano” (Los Angeles Times) and “pure silk voice”. She recently completed her second season as a Domingo-Thornton Young Artist at the Los Angeles Opera.
2010-2011 season highlights included the title role in Mozart’s opera ‘Zaide’ under the direction of Maestro Haselbock with Musica Angelica. She appeared with the Long Beach Opera as Lidochka in Shostakovich’s ‘Moscow Cherry Town’ as well as singing the role of the Williamson Girl in David Lang’s new opera ‘The Difficulty of Crossing a Field’. She also made her symphony debut with Orchestra Nova and attended the Aspen Music Festival.
She opened the 2009-2010 season as Giannetta (L'elisir d'amore) with LA Opera. The rest of her 09/10 performances included Ginevra Scotti in Schreker's ‘Die Gezeichneten’, Rosina in matinee performances of ‘Il Barbiere di Siviglia’ with Maestro Michele Mariotti, along with covering the roles of Asteria in Handel's ‘Tamerlano’ and Woglinde/Waldvögel in Wagner's ‘Der Ring des Nibelungen’. She also performed the Bachianas Brasileiras at The Colburn School and sang under Maestro Placido Domingo’s baton in a concert of Zarzuela Highlights.
Her 2008-2009 debut season with LA Opera included performances as Frasquita (Carmen), Papagena (Die Zauberflöte) and Drossel in Braunfels’ Die Vögel. She also made her debuts with the L.A. Philharmonic in Esa-Pekka Salonen's 'Wing On Wing' and with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Maestro James Conlon. She attended the Ravinia Festival Stean's Institute in Chicago in August of 2009.
In the summer of 2008 she was a member of Santa Fe Opera’s Young Artist program and was awarded the Mackay Grant Award. As a member of the Wolf Trap Opera Studio, she sang in Wolf Trap Opera Company’s Grammy nominated production of John Musto’s Volpone as Judge #1. In 2004 she studied German Lieder at the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria.
On the concert stage she has appeared as a soloist with the LA Phil, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Opera Symphony and is a frequent soloist of Baroque and Classical Orchestras performing early works of Telemann, Handel, Bach, Vivaldi, Haydn, Purcell and Mozart.
Ms. Vinzant won the Dallas Opera Guild’s top prize in 2007 and is a two-time recipient of Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions awards. She studied at Indiana University with her teacher Carol Vaness and earned her Bachelor degree at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.
