Joseph Hallman, classical music composer

Joseph Hallman

Biography

Joseph Hallman is a successful young Philadelphia composer who has worked with some of today's most talented musicians and artists. Known for his generosity of collaboration and joy for composing, he is quickly becoming a noted name on concert programs both nationally and internationally. In addition to teaching a studio of young composers, he has been invited to give master classes and lectures at home and abroad.

Hallman's recently completed series of chamber concerti were composed for members of the Philadelphia Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Pittsburgh Symphony, and Cleveland Orchestra. Akin to Bach's Brandenburg Concertos and Hindemith's Kammermusik, these pieces have won acclaim for their wit and strength.

A longtime collaborator with the internationally acclaimed American cellist Alisa Weilerstein, Hallman recently returned from the world premiere of his newest Cello Concerto, featuring Ms. Weilerstein and the St. Petersburg Chamber Philharmonic in Russia. The recording of this work has now been released on iTunes and all other major digital distributors. This fall he will release three recordings, a piccolo sonata and two collections of works for solo piano. Hallman's work with poets, in particular Jessica Hornik, has inspired both strong relationships and beautiful works for voices and chamber ensembles. Of late he has been in cahoots with the English horn icon Thomas Stacy, of the New York Philharmonic, bassoonist Pascal Gallois, and organist Kevin Bowyer.

Hallman has also worked in the downtown New York music scene with the improv/experimental group ThingNY. His Suite for Boombox and Piano was composed for Kathy Supové, who premiered it at the Tribeca Music Festival. He has also collaborated with the poet and screenwriter Antwone Fisher. Cultivating his special love for chamber music, Hallman has worked with the Avian Ensemble and Chamber Music Now and this season will be working with the Linden Quartet, the 2009 Fischoff Competition grand-prize winners; Enhak , the 2008 International Chamber Music Ensemble Competition winners; and several other wind and string chamber groups. His Alice, a ballet based on Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, will be premiered in San Diego in April 2010. He is currently working on multiple concerto projects with American and international orchestras.

Hallman serves as an adjunct faculty member at Drexel University, Composer-in-Residence at the Rosenbach Museum in Philadelphia, and Composer-in-Residence and Assistant Director of Festivals for the Traverse Arts Project. As a grant review panelist, Hallman assists the American Composers Forum.
