Musician's or Publisher's Notes

Known as the "black-Mahler," Afro-British composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875–1912) was a prolific composer. During his short lifetime, the composer made three successful visits to the USA, and during his third visit in 1910, he toured with African-American singer and composer Harry T. Burleigh. His increased social awareness of the need to establish the dignity of the black man made him seriously consider emigrating to the United States. Three-Fours, Op. 71 was composed in 1909 for solo piano. The Suite comprises six dance-like movements in 3/4 time filled with intriguing chromatic harmony, subtle tempo changes, wide dynamic range, rhythmic energy, and contrasting middle sections.
