Sophia Agranovich plays Transcendental Etude "Mazeppa" by Franz Liszt at her solo concert at Bargemusic in New York on August 6, 2022. It is considered to be one of the most difficult piano pieces demanding athletic technique, dramatic emotional intensity, and mastery of poetic lyricism. Liszt based it on the poem by Victor Hugo, which describes the life of a Ukrainian nobleman, Ivan Stepanovich Mazepa-Koledinsky. He was punished by being tied naked to a wild horse and set free to roam, eventually reaching Ukraine. Mazeppa was saved by Ukrainian Cossacks and became their military leader. This story has a wide cultural legacy in literature, poetry, music, theater and art.
