Gabriel
Pierné's Solo de concert was written
in 1898 as the concours solo for the
Paris Conservatoire. These concours solos were, and still are, used
as the yearly examination pieces to test the students' progress in their chosen
course of study. Pierné himself attended
the Paris Conservatoire, studying organ with Franck and composition with
Massenet. His Solo de concert is representative of these turn-of-the-century
display pieces in its melodic interest and technical virtuosity. Two contrasting themes, one assertive and
one lyrical, are put through various transformations and culminate in a jaunty
closing section with an energetic conclusion. Peter Kolkay
