This is a live performance recording from a Classical Mondays concert at the Chicago Cultural Center on March 16, 2009.
The work, rarely played in the US, is in two movements. Bax's musical language is evocative of both the Romantic era (with beautiful melodies and recognizable thematic material) and French Impressionism (lush harmonies with surprising modulations to unrelated keys).
The first movement is marked Molto moderato and rhapsodic in structure and melodic devlopment. The second movement is marked Vivace and hints of perpetual motion works for strings popular at the time.
This is one of my favorite sonatas for clarinet and I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoy performing it!
