The Concerto was written for the Mozart year and
originally conceived as a Pipa Concerto (Pipa is an ancient Chinese musical
instrument, it has four strings and belongs to the plucked category. Sometimes
it's called the Chinese lute – Classical Connect). This is the premier recording of the version
for violin and string orchestra, which is quite different from the Pipa
version.
Movement II is more of a dream. Wooden boats on a hazy day on a river somewhere in China. The Movement was inspired by some old
Chinese art work and is rather contemplative in character. It segues into:
The Third Movement which is rather happy and fun in
character. It has definitely a
scherzando character. The movement
deals with Spanish Rhythms; the composer suggests that he had that idea since a
lot of restaurants in Manhattan, where he currently resides, serve mix of
Spanish and Chinese food in his neighborhood.
Daniel Schnyder is a composer/performer with a dynamic reputation
in both jazz and classical fields. He recorded over ten CDs of his own music
for Enja Records, Col Legno, Koch Jazz, CCnc, Universal, BIS, TCB, Arabesque
and Red Records. Daniel was born 1961 in Zurich, Switzerland and lives
in New York City.
