Biography
At the age of 5, Elena Ulyanova began to study piano with her mother, Larisa Ulyanova, in Saki, Crimea. She won several first prizes in competitions while in Ukraine. In Moscow she was first prize winner of the Gnessin College of Music piano competition and the Momontov Scholarship at Gnessin Academy of Music. Upon graduation from Gnessin, she was offered a scholarship to Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory and promptly became a prizewinner in the second Rachmaninoff International Piano Competition. After receiving the Master of Music degree from Moscow Conservatory, she pursued postgraduate study, while performing in Russia, Ukraine, and Europe. Elena has also studied with Emanual Krasovsky, Victor Derevianko, Jerome Rose, Leslie Howard, and Brian Ganz.
In April 2004, Elena recorded a CD in Moscow featuring the music of Franz Liszt, which is available from Classical Records. She immigrated to Washington, DC in May 2004. In 2005 she studied with Howard Shelley, who has recorded all of Rachmaninoff s works, to prepare for recording the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. The Rhapsody and Piano Concerto No. 2 are featured on her new CD with the Russian Philharmonic Orchestra released in July, 2006 by Bel Air Music. In November 2007, she recorded a DVD of her recital at the Fitzgerald Theater in Rockville, MD featuring music of Soler, Haydn, Rachmaninoff, Brahms, and Liszt.
Her performances with orchestras include the Vienna Musikverein Orchestra conducted by Martin Turnovsky, the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra with Alexander Vedernikov, the Crimea State Symphony Orchestra in Yalta, State Russian Orchestra "Boyan", the Omsk, the Scottsdale Symphony Orchestra in Arizona, and the American Balalaika Symphony in Virginia. With the Rachmaninoff White Lilacs Festival Orchestra, Elena performed the Rachmaninoff second concerto on only four hours notice. In the United States, she has performed recitals in Washington DC, Florida, and in New York at Steinway Hall and Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall.
