The version performed today is a reduction of the
original orchestral version performed by Rafael
Serrallet (to whom the composer dedicated the
piece) and the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Panama in June 2007. It is a theatrical work; the guitar assumes
the role of a "buffo" tenor called Juan Rana who asks the audience to follow
him in his adventures. The structure is an
A- B- A format in concertante style. The harmonic, melodic and rhythmical
material is colorful and joyful. The piece presents a confrontation between two
figures represented in two main themes: Juan Rana, the man, stupid in his
arrogance and male vanity; and Beatriz, the female, clever, stronger and full
of false sweetness. Michael Cansfield
