Birds in Winter: prelude for harp, Con Moto Michael Mauldin
As a young boy, Michael Mauldin (b. 1947) was a frequent visitor to Ghost Ranch in New Mexico where his family organized church retreats. He became fascinated with the landscape of the southwest and was determined to live in a place which "not only surrounds you with space, but opens up a new space inside you." 'Birds in Winter', composed in 1989, is a very evocative piece and a true reflection of the light, the space and the timelessness that inspired Mauldin. Despite its stark nature, each short movement has an engaging charm and at various moments, one can almost hear the chirping of birds. Elizabeth Meyers
