Beethoven's
Fantasie opus 77, from 1809, is something that Beethoven may have simply
improvised at the piano. A superb pianist, he frequently improvised at the
piano for his audiences; this was a highly prized and very necessary skill for
a performer. This piece isn't Beethoven the musical architect but rather
Beethoven the humorous, light hearted virtuoso. The piece is full of wild
contrasts and drama, from sudden passages in unexpected keys to lovely,
mellow tunes, to uplifting harmonic progressions, and, finally, a very goofy
ending.
