Ferruccio
Busoni was born in Empoli, near Florence,
in 1866, the only child of musical parents. His father was a virtuoso clarinetist,
while his mother, who came from Trieste,
was a pianist of German ancestry. Busoni's early concert career as a pianist of
phenomenal ability took him to Vienna,
where he soon made an impression as a performer, composer and improviser. He
benefited greatly from the rich cultural life that Vienna
offered.
On the advice
of Brahms, he moved to Berlin
in 1886 to study with Carl Reinecke. From
there he moved for a time to the Helsinki Conservatory, where he influenced a
new generation of Finnish composers. He continued his career as a pianist with
concert tours to America
and elsewhere, and in 1894 settled in Berlin,
which would remain his home until his death in 1924, except for a period in Switzerland
during the war.
This powerful
piano work, composed in 1920, borrows some famous melodies from Georges Bizet's
opera Carmen and connects them in the
style of a fantasy. A. Wakabayashi
