Gargoyles   Lowell Liebermann

   Presto
Adagio semplice, ma con molto rubato
   Allegro moderato
   Presto feroce

Liebermann is one of today's most widely performed and commissioned composers. His Gargoyles is a neo-Romantic work of four highly contrasted movements that convey an eeriness and sense of mystery.  A student of art and architecture, Liebermann uses the title simply to characterize sharply drawn sketches of a florid and macabre nature, rather than to suggest any actual musical depiction of these ornamental grotesqueries.

The first etude is a feverish study in double notes, wide leaps, and quickly changing dynamics and articulation. The second features legato octaves above an ostinato bass. The third is a study in legato melody accompanied by a gently undulating figuration. The final movement, a dazzling, dramatic and technically demanding toccata concludes the diabolical set.   Michelle Kim
