A proud Hungarian citizen, Franz Liszt was the first composer to start using national ‘folklore’ themes in ‘serious’ compositions. The most well-known of the 19 Hungarian Rhapsodies that he wrote is this second one, probably also mainly because of its use in famous cartoons with Tom & Jerry and Bugs Bunny. Frequently performed by the composer himself, it quickly became one of the most regular performed pieces of the piano literature of the 19th century by which every notable pianist would "prove his salt".Notes by Rob Hilberink
