Born in Paris, Francis Poulenc was an eclectic composer. He composed music in all major genres,
including chamber music, oratorio, opera, art songs, ballet music and
orchestral music. A renowned critic Claude Rostand described Poulenc as "half bad boy, half monk", a tag that followed him
for the rest of his career. The
compositions of Poulenc, many in small forms, are infused with the grace and
wit of the Parisian popular chansons.
