The life work of Austrian composer Anton Webern is,
in many ways, a direct reflection of the tumultuous times in Western Europe
during the first half of the 20th century. Webern's compositional roots, however, are embedded in the
tradition of the masters of the end of the 19th century—Mahler,
Wagner and Brahms. His earliest works
are deeply personal and expressive and by today's standards sound very
traditional.
Langsamer Satz (slow
movement) was written in June,1905. Webern was spending that summer on vacation with his cousin, Wilhelmine,
with whom he fell in love and would later marry. The emotion of the music is clear and direct, and depicts his
love and devotion for Wilhelmine.Kurt
