Biography
Brazilian pianist Victor Cayres has performed extensively in Brazil, Europe, and the United States, earning praise for concerts with the Sine Nomine String Quartet in Switzerland and as a soloist with such orchestras as the Boston Pops and the Brno Philharmonic in the Czech Republic. He has also appeared as a soloist with the NEC Philharmonia, Sioux City Symphony Orchestra, Symphony Pro-Musica, Boston University Symphony Orchestra, Orquestra Petrobras Pró-Música, Orquestra Sinfônica Brasileira, Orquestra Sinfônica and Orquestra de Câmera at the University of São Paulo.
He has collaborated with such conductors as Ronaldo Bologna, Mark Churchill, Marc David, Ryan Haskins, Gil Jardim, Theophanis Kapsopoulos, Keith Lockhart, Norton Morozowisk, Donald Palma, Roberto Tibiriçá, and Jan Zbavitel. He has toured with the Orchestre des Jeunes de Fribourg under the direction of Kapsopoulos in the Czech Republic and Switzerland.
A frequent guest artist at Interlochen Center for the Arts and Boston University Tanglewood Institute, Mr. Cayres has recently performed at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, at the Puerto Rico International Piano Festival, and Banff Center for the Arts. An advocate for new music, he has recorded works by David Owens for Albany Records, works by Joseph Summer and Charles Ives for Parma records, and works by John H. Wallace in collaboration with the Arneis String Quartet.
Mr. Cayres has garnered several prizes in national and international piano competitions, including the 8th Iowa Piano Competition, 18th Leoš Janáček International Piano Competition in Brno (Czech Republic), Sommerfestspiele Klavier Wettbewerb in Murten (Switzerland), and the Gina Bachauer South American Competition, among many others. He currently serves on the piano faculty at Boston University School of Music.
Mr. Cayres holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of São Paulo, a Masters from the New England Conservatory, and a doctorate from Boston University.
