Tango for Viola and Piano Efrem Zimbalist
Efram Zimbalist was one of the world's prominent violinists of the 20th century. Born in Russia in 1889, he quickly made a name for himself as a young virtuoso touring the concert halls of Europe. A performance with the Boston Symphony brought him to the United States, where he stayed as professor and then director of the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. Zimbalist was a prolific composer and arranger of short works, and in 1942 he arranged a suite of Spanish dances written by the 19th century violinist Pablo de Sarasate for viola and piano. This Tango is the first of four works in the suite, dedicated to William Primrose, one of the 20th century's greatest violists. Eric Nowlin
