Brahms’s Scherzo in c minor is the earliest surviving example of his writing for violin and piano. It resulted from a collaboration between Brahms and two of his composer friends, Robert Schumann and Albert Dietrich, who together wrote a piece for their celebrated violinist friend, Joseph Joachim. Joachim, a violin soloist with a glamorous yet perhaps lonely life of a touring artist, had adopted the personal motto “Frei, aber einsam,” or “free, but lonely,” and the trio of composers dubbed their collective work the “F.A.E.” sonata accordingly. This rousing middle movement of the sonata is often played alone today.Jessica Mathaes
