Franz Waxman was one of the many German musicians who fled Nazi Germany in the 1930s to end up as composers of Hollywood film music. But Waxman had started his film music career even before leaving Germany. His first important movie assignment was orchestrating and conducting the score for Marlene Dietrich’s classic film, The Blue Angel. The film's producer was so pleased with the orchestration of the score that he gave Waxman his first major composing assignment, the background music for Fritz Lang's 1933 version of the Hungarian stage play Liliom (later Americanized as the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Carousel).
For the 1946 film Humoresque, he wrote a special piece using Pablo Sarasate’s Carmen Fantasy on themes from Bizet's opera. Isaac Stern played on the soundtrack, after which Waxman elaborated and orchestrated the piece for Jascha Heifetz, emphasizing its Gypsy character.
