A 1930 graduate of the Juilliard School,
Irving Schlein was an American-born composer who lived and worked his whole
life in New York City.
A student of both Aaron Copland and Roy Harris, Schlein made his living as
a Broadway and theatrical composer. Although he was very prolific in his
classical compositions as well, many of them were not performed or even
discovered until the turn of the 21st century, fifteen years after his death.
As he made his living primarily as an entertainer, he wrote very
"accessible" works, such as the Violin Sonata No. 2. From 2001-2008,
members of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic undertook a major recording project
of Schlein's classical works. Many of his compositions, unlike much 20th
century music, are full of energy, optimism, and popular rhythms. The Violin
Sonata No. 2 bears many of these characteristics. A short three-movement work,
this piece is bursting with deep emotion and a rich and varied color palette.
This performance marks the United States premiere of the piece. Ilana Setapen
