Biography
Xiang Zou [pronounced Sheeang Zoh] was the youngest pianist to become First Laureate of the Calgary's Honens International Piano Competition. His performance with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and Sir Neville Marriner brought the cheering audience to its feet.
In the fall of 2006, Zou released in Canada a commercial CD featuring music by Schubert and Godowsky. He has given major recitals at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York, the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, the Busoni Festival in Bolzano, the Women's Musical Club in Toronto, and the Beijing International Modern Music Festival.
His many other solo and chamber music appearances have taken place in major cities such as Beijing, Berlin, Boston, Chicago (Ravinia Festival), Frankfurt, Hamburg, Munich, New York, Santa Barbara, Shanghai, Verbier (Verbier Festival) and Vevey. As soloist, he has performed with the orchestras of Vancouver, Edmonton, Victoria, Shreveport, Shanghai and Shenzhen, Calgary, China Central Opera and Shanghai Opera. His performances have been broadcast by Canadian Broadcast Company (CBC), WQXR in New York, WCLV in Cleveland, Central Foreign Radio in Beijing and Eastern Radio in Shanghai. His other first prizes include the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition, Shreveport Symphony Nena Wideman Piano Competition, Music Bridge and Vancouver Symphony Orchestra Music Competition, and Hong Kong International Piano Open Competition.
Xiang Zou enjoys pursuing new music as well as standard repertoire. He founded the New Asian Ensemble, which is devoted to exploration and exposure of new music, especially the music of Asian contemporary composers to the Western audience. He has commissioned and given premieres of music by Xiaogang Ye, Huang Ruo, Lee Pui Ming, De-Qing Wen, Jin Xiang and Zhou Tian.
A native of Hunan China, he studied at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, and at The Juilliard School for his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees. His principal teachers have been Jerome Lowenthal and Xiaosheng Zhao. He continues at Juilliard in their prestigious Artist Diploma in Performance program studying with Robert McDonald.
