Vingt Regards sur l'Enfant-Jésus (Twenty
gazes/contemplations on the infant Jesus) is
a suite for solo piano lasting about two hours. Throughout the whole, three
themes function as leitmotifs, permeating the individual regards and holding
the cycle together: Theme of God; Theme of the Star and of the Cross: and, Theme
of chords. The composer describes Regard
de l'Esprit de joie as " violent dance, wild tone of the horns, rapture of
the Holy Spirit. I have always been struck by the fact that God is happy, and
that unutterable and perpetual joy lives in the Soul of Christ. Joy, which for
me is ecstasy, an intoxicant in the most extravagant sense of the word." Xiang Zou
