Musician's or Publisher's Notes

Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, a son of Johann Sebastian Bach, interestingly, was better known as a musician than his father in his lifetime. He is particularly noted for his use of “empfindsamer stil” (sensitive style), which is evident in this work which comes from the transition period between the Baroque and Classical eras, when clarity in harmony, phrase, and structure was preferred. Two main ideas are developed to varying degrees in several sections of the piece. There are also bursts of running 64th notes interspersed between the main sections, which gives an impression of improvisation throughout the piece. C. P. E. Bach also explores innovative tonal relationships; he starts off with F-sharp minor and moves through foreign keys such as E-flat minor, B-flat minor, B minor, and C minor.      Sookkyung Cho
