George Rochberg began his creative life as a composer of serial music but transitioned from that strict form after he felt it proved ineffectual for expressing the grief he experienced with the death of his teenage son in 1964. Composed in 1966, the piece was dedicated to harpsichordist Igor Kipnis, who premiered the work at the University of Pennsylvania, where Rochberg was chairman of the music department. Despite its bow to traditional tonality, Rochberg’s beautiful Nach Bach seems a thoroughly modern work. Rochberg’s bow to Bach can be clearly heard in his quotes from the Partita No. 6 in E Minor, BWV 830.Ko-Eun Yi
